  • suspension upgrade

im going to be giving my car ('98 GL) a christmas present, and i was just wondering what other parts i should get when i order coilovers.

would i need strut mounts? anything else?

may as well do it all at once when the cars apart.

Strut tops, and maybe go for some polly bushes if planning on egtting sway/stress bars etc.

Yep, replace all the strut top mounts (front and rear). Will save you having to take them out again to replace them after a month's use.

You can swap out control arm bushes as well if you want, but I'd opt for the heavy duty rubber items rather than the poly, especially if you're just planning on daily driving the Golf. Stiffening up the chassis is great for the feel and handling but it gets to the point where it gets a little uncomfortable for daily driving. On my GL I've got heavy duty strut mounts, R32 control arm solid rubber bushings, BFI Stealth-range engine mounts (poly), VR6 sway bar and coilovers. I used to run poly strut mounts on the rear but swapped them out for OEM ones and they don't squeak anymore. I daily drive the thing and sometimes I find it a relief hopping into the parents' Camry. Don't get me wrong, I'd choose my Golf over a Camry a thousand times over, but sometimes a compliant ride helps the drive home through Parramatta Rd that much more easier!

I'd suggest just do the strut mounts first as a move from stock suspension to coilovers is a big change, and then after a few months if you're open to the idea of stiffening up the chassis some more, then do the others.
      Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
      Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

I dont think rear strut mounts wear out that quickly on mk3's . Ive sold alot more rear bump stops !
