wet footwell?

We have not had much rain here since really wet at Christmas, so unless the water in the footwell has been there since then (entirely possible) it is probably not that, what are the symptoms of a buggered heater matrix, is there anything I should look for? I rarely use the heater, especially up here, but occasionally in June/July. Thanks I'll check the door seals anyway, they were totally shot on a similar age Pug 306 I had!

Have never owned one of these, so this could be rubbish.
Having buggered a few heater boxes /matrix in my day, i learnt to run the heater every so often, all the year round so the same coolant isnt sitting in the one one closed loop for ten months, or so. PITA on hot days, but pays off.
