Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Slow cranking

  • Slow cranking

Battery was weak and couldn't hold a charge so bought a new one. Installed it just then only to find that the car still cranks very slow (like it was still on the old battery), but it does start. Sometimes it just clicks, with no cranking whatsoever. I've cleaned the terminals with a wire brush, as well as the cable ends.

    Could this be the starter?

Mines doing that as well, accompanied by a sickening spinning noise, starts first go 3/4 times though, my money would be on the starter.

I'm thinking it's the starter too as it still does it with the new battery and wire-brushed terminals and cable ends.

It doesn't start then die, or die while idling, and when the crank does turn, it will start up, just very slowly, so I'm I don't think it's the ignition coil. On occasion it just clicks though (when turning the key).

common problem with the starter motors are when they stick on and make a horrible noise
            had to get mine refurbished
havent really heard of them being slow though

Its an earth fault on your car Ray.

Get a better fatter earth cable, or two. Make sure all the ends are tight and earthed to a good metal point of the chassis and engine.

Also check the live points on the positive part of the circuit.

Just that it used to start up just fine before, and I was using the same cables...

I'll try using thicker cables. A lot cheaper than another starter anyway!

Check all the cable connections are clean and tight. I had a bad earth connection in a diesel golf once...after a few cranks that main earth cable would actually get warm.
Also a worn starter can cause slow cranking - as if the battery is flat... a friend had that problem with a Rodeo.

Turned out it was the alternator - wasn't charging the battery!

Wouldn't explain why it was slow to crank when the new (charged) battery went on though
