Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VR6 - Cooked. What's it worth to sell?

    Hey everyone.

    My friend owns a 97 VR6.

Last week she heard a rattling/knocking sound from the engine.
She drove it about 20km to work before needing to get it towed to VW Hoppers Crossing who instantly diagnosed it as the timing chain had slipped and put the timing out. Therefore the pistons were head butting the valves...for at least 20kms... OUCH!!!

It will take them 16 hours to give a full repair report and then what ever it costs to fix it.

She has decided to let it go.

My question is, What is it worth?

    Any comments will be helpful.

    Cheers.
    Yogi.

there is another bloke on the forum, who has also struck some trouble with his VR6, (read engine is kaputt).

unfortunately there's no said values really, you can always put it on ebay to get rid of it, or ask for offers..

Depends on the condition of the car really. Is it worth saving or is it a shabby example?
Might only get a couple grand tops with a bung engine. Its expensive if you have to pay someone to slap a good second hand engine in it which would be the cheapest way of getting it running again.

          Is it Auto or manual?
I reckon a couple of Gs with a bung engine is about right.

I reckon part it out. I'm five mins away and would definitely be interested in quite a few parts on it.

                2nd hand motor

You can get a good 2nd hand motor with warranty for $1000. Get it fitted if you can't do it ur self.
Ur VR6 will be flying again in no time. Don't wreck it or sell it cheap. Fix it.

Don't know about that they're still fetching good money. When they're only worth $4K they'll be getting wrecked not repaired by insurers.
