  • Roof Racks

hey guys, having owned my GL for a few months and getting sick of going through the process of folding down the back seats to fit bikes in my car (which is made 10x more difficult with that rear sway bar thing across the top of the back seats) i am going to invest in some roof racks to make it easier to carry 2 bikes.

i am looking at getting Thule racks as they seem to be the most popular and practical as you dont need to drill holes in the roof, but just wondering what anyone out the is running? are they safe/sturdy enough for a couple of BMX's? and how much im looking at forking out for some?

    Cheers Tom.

Some info in this thread: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=37459

You can't buy the 404/444 racks brand new anymore but once in a while they'll show up on eBay or even in the forum classifieds. Just keep your eyes peeled.

Bike attachments for square bars will suit these racks. Plenty of people mount bikes on their roofs this way, so as long as it's attached on correctly, you won't have any problems.
    Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
    Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

thanks rayray. looks like it might be a bit of a wait until i find some.

i had a look on the Thule site and the racks alone retail (or used to retail as it looks like the site hasnt been updated since 05) for $300. but they did have a clip on bike rack for rear hatch of the Golf that would be just as good and a bit cheaper, although im guessing these too arent available new either! i do prefer the look of the roof racks though - thanks for the pics Chris.

il keep an eye out for some. cheers guys
