  • high pitch whine when accerating

    Hi all,

Ive noticed that my 97 2.0 GL makes a high pitch whine when accelerating.

It starts at about 2800rpm and gets louder and higher pitch as you climb the revs..

Sounds kinda ugly .. on a bad downshift (revs not matched and go really high) it makes the noise too..

Any ideas what this could be?

Mine did this when the timing belt cover came loose. It was the timing belt rubbing on the timing belt cover. One of the little metal clips came off. It is worth checking cause it is a very easy fix

Alternator whine coming through the stereo? Can happen to any car with an amp installed.

Otherwise I highly doubt it would be gearbox whine...

Whats it like when you rev it static mate??? timing belt tensioners prone to whining if well overdue. You can run the engine with v belt and multi ribbed serpentine belt one after the other to diagnose, if these 2 are off and its till there ( in that area that is) then you are looking at the timing belt tensioner.

Jimmy, do you recall the whine of a 16v cam belt that is too tight. A great noise.

There is a simple way how you could try, if it is not properly tensioned multi rib belt.

With the engine running, spray belt with water, if the belt becomes noisy, it is loose or misaligned.

If the noise after few second goes repeatedly “off” and “on” the belt is misaligned.
If after spraying with water noise intensifies, the belt is not properly tensioned.

The noise seems to be coming from the alternator..
My mechanic sprayed it with some oil and it seemed to subside..

BUt came back the next day.. Is it odd that an alternator would make noise as revs rise?

It seems be be happening during 80% of my driving now, so still somewhat on and off...

                  Any fixes for this?

A new accessory belt and pulley by the looks of it.

Definitely concur that it sounds like a belt or pulley.

It could be the A/C pulley - I've heard that happen.

Also could be coming from your power steering pump, but probably not - you'd hear other noises if there was a problem there.
