  • 2 Door CL starting woes

    Hi All,

We have just recently given our old golf to the in-laws and upgraded to a MK5 Jetta (thank god) - now a quick question that has been ticking in my mind

We had a constant issue with the car (hence why we upgraded) where the car would start but after about 1 second would turn off.

Initially we thought battery - Replaced but no change. Checked all the connections and cleaned the terminals etc - no go.

We ran through about 2.5 years of this issue happening on and off. We initially thought that water was getting in somewhere as the issue seemed to happen when we drove through a massive puddle. However after that it just seemed to happen randomly on and off. As i said the car would completely fire up without any issues - then it would just completely die.

Also had a few occasions where the car would just turn off mid flight which was interesting. It is driving us nuts as even Voltswagen couldn't even find the problem.

    Any ideas?

My suggestion, though I'm not a mechanic is replacing the Coilpack which cracks and acts up especially when there is moisture around. Replacing plugs, leads, old distributor cap and coil pack often sorts out these issues in a Mk 3 CL.
