Thanks Guys. I believe it was not until the Mk4 that Golfs were galvanised. Can rust be an issue in the Mark3s and, if so, where should I look?? Cheers. Geoff

I think I read in my manual (Mk4) that the car's body and protection from rust is under warranty from VW until it is 12 years old due to the galvanising. This is of course is it hasn't been in a huge accident and badly repaired.

My Mk3 didn't have much rust though, maybe a tiny dot or two where the paint had been rubbed/chipped off around the driver's door frame from getting in and out in a tight garage. Really nothing though mate.

Check the door sills, strut towers and floors but it seriously shouldn't be a real problem IMO...

Well, I have looked at two private cars and a number of dealers cars>One private car looks promising, the other has rust where a new end was welded on!! The dealers cars are really bad news.

Another question... I noticed a bar between the sides inside the car at the rear on which the load cover hinges. Is this removable? ie if I wanted to use the car for a bulky item can I lay down the back seats and remove the load cover and the hing thingy completely? Thanks. Geoff

The rear bar is a saftey ber to attach child restraints to. It is bolted in with ssnap off bolts. These can be drilled or cut out and then normal bolts put in to allow you to remove it if you wish.

I have a decent Mk3 for sale soon, dunno if it has abs, I`ll check.

Thanks. I am yet to find one with ABS so have now put that in the "nice to have" category. More important to find a reliable car in good condition for female uni student. Manual or auto - preferably a light colour.

If you want reliable, dont get an auto.

                        +1

The ABS works great in my VR6.
The functionality of older ABS systems isn't inferior to newer systems from what I have found. The only thing I'd consider about a car with ABS is the actual age of the system, with regard to wear and tear, not the technology involved.

I agree but also disagree I have an auto and have had no problems with anything gearbox related (touch wood) Everything that has broken/needs replacing is either interior, exterior or engine bay related.

                          I think it's just MK3's in general

They are not ALL bad news. I got a beaut, but for that one, there was about 5 or 6 other **** ones.

From what I've read the auto box was heaps sloppy.
