  • question for VR6 engine experts only

    can someone whos seen for themselves tell me wether the valve springs run shims under them...ie the washers that go between the head casting and tghe spring itself....this is for completely stock motor

    would anyone know if there is an online version of the catolog the VW dealers use....

    I called them up and they said it doesnt show any shims but I dont trust them

    would anyone have access to the catalog on their PC?

        I don't reckon there's anything under the spring. I'd call it a washer not a shim. Shim implies it takes out/sets some clearance.

          yeah washer u could call it but they are also referred to as shims often

                  Hi mate there is no shim under the spring on an AAA engine mate, it sits on the head. Hope this helps. Ive done heaps of these engines mate. Pm me if you have any Qs.

                      cool spring sits direct on the head...no shim/washer....cheers

                      its a very unusual thing...most alloy heads have steel shims under the springs to stop damage...maybe its not need when theres 2 springs per valve????

                        Yeah i hear you mate, the 8 valvers do have the washer , well should i call it a coller or seat, but yeah you are right mate sounds and looks wrong, but done a few and all good.
                        Did the tiny cams spin you out or what???????

                          certainly a weird motor...I wonder what the engineers thought when someone suggested building such a bizarr layout.....crude but effective

                            Just think the guy who designed it mate and really kudos to him , went on to design the W8, W12 , and the 4mo engine , Bentley engines etc all started at his AAA-2.8l and ABV-2.9 motors
