  • My taillight is leaking...

This is why my central locking motor died after I got it back from the panelbeater.

Unfortunately, it looks as though the mounting surface (the hole in the rear quarter metal) for the right rear taillight isn't quite 100% shapely. The left side looks a bit straighter and naturally better than the right hand side, which I find weird because the panel itself is new.

Anyway...I've got a ''working'' gasket on the light at the moment but it isn't working. Can I add another gasket, or use some sort of special spray on foam or gasket stuff to create a better waterproofing?

or drill a hole in the bottom of the lamp unit so the water drains away as quick as it goes in

Nah it's coming into the boot...it's not going into the light at all!

The top of the gasket is letting it drip through. I was thinking of some sort of silicone but that would be difficult, messy and dodgy.. (don't have much choice about the dodgy!).

Use silicon. Run a bead along where the gap is neatly. Then wet your finger (stops it sticking to your finger and it will run better) and run it along the bead to remove the excess and wipe it into the gap. Easy.

Or you can do what my mate used to do with his old hilux whenever there was a rattle, hole etc.. Just stuff rags in it! hahahaha.

My lights were leaking aswell, and with the car siting outside for 2 months without moving, it caused my central locking pump to go aswell. Just had it replaced and I think it's stuffed again, damn doors wouldnt lock this morning

Mate do what I did and just pull the centra locking motor out from the black styrofoam stuff it sits in, and leave it as far away from the headlight as possible.

I just had to climb out my boot as I couldn't get the doors to unlock from the inside!!! My pump was making some pretty bad sounding noises before (whirring) so I've ripped it out and opened it up. It wasnt replaced like I thought before, it was only cleaned out with "electroclean" what ever that is and is playing up again so Ill let it dry out over night, put it back together again and slap it in... fingers crossed it bloody works again!
                      Whats a new one worth?
It has quite a bit of this sticky goey smelly **** on the inside, guessing thats the electroclean stuff?

Oh and can you still buy the gaskets? Mine had fallen apart when I first replaced the lights and I guess I should probably put new ones in now...

I'm sure you can. Either that or you can just go to clarks rubber and buy some similar foam and cut it identical to the opposite side then just flip it over.

The electric motor is worth around 80-100 second hand but i dunno about new. I wouldn't bother with new.. I reckon yours will work if you clean it out/dry it out enough. Mine did, but it went and got continually soaked again...

Nup!! They're barstards when the central locking motor fails.

Because the circuitry is damaged by water, when you try and open it, the circuitry will act up and not let the air go through/not let the door pin stay up. However if you unplug the airline, or the motor itself, it works.

i thought you would be able to lift it ith one hand and open the door with the other, then let it go... hehe

anyway - i was going to mention you can get a 'sikaflex' style blakc sealant in a neat little foil tube (like glue comes in) for small jobs like this from supercheap. makes little sealing jobs easy because you can cut the nozzle just right to run the bead you want, and you dont have to spend $20 on a whole tube of sikaflex for 98% of it to go off
