    ok, heres what happened,
driving down the road, stop on the lights, take off, 50m and then it dies
its still running but the engine is shaking and its working all out of shape (like when u swap ur spark plug lines so the cylinders rnt in order), ratheling and it sounds like its gonna turn off any sec, turned it off and started again a couple of times, after that it will not turn on again, the starter motor is working because it sounds like its gonna turn on any sec, but it wont

    what can it be??
first though was a fuel pump
    then the computer

mechanics r not open till couple of days so cant do anything till then
    appreciate any help/tips/ideas

its my gf's car which she just bought so not happy Jane

I reckon its the coil. Look at the coil on the firewall in the dark and there should be a light display

If you want one in the next couple of days, I have second hand for $50 or new for $100.

$100 seems very cheap! one for my bros Seat which is probly similar cost us about $135 from Euro car parts. which was the cheapest we could find.

Deemo. find the lead that goes from the dizzy to the firewall of the car. its connected to the coil.
Im not sure if this is the correct method. be careful u dont shock yourself but this is how i did it.
I pulled the lead off the dizzy and held it close to the engines block and then got my bro to crank it to see if a nice strong spark was jumping. and i got nothing at all. Some people use a sparkplug to test them as well. But i was being lazy at the time.

someone correct me if im wrong tho. im one of those dodgy try hard backyard mechanics

The coils all crack and if you look at them in the dark, they arc across the gap and it looks like a mad light show. Its not so easy to see in the daytime.

$100 is the cheapest you will get for a new one. Thats my price, if you want to pay more, go elsewhere.

I only have one new one left at the moment, be quick or miss out

Can someone give me a loan of an old defective coil?

I would just like to see why they fail and see if there is a temporary fix.

I had the same problem with my GL when i first bought it, and found that i had water in the dizzy, and all it needed was a dry out and a spray with **** smiths electrical spray (like a solvent based water dispersant). Sometimes you cant see the water at first because it could be out of site so give it a good spray and leave it a while to dry out).

The problem i had was literally identical to what ur describing...

Hope this helps (could be a simple and cheap alternative to replacing the coilpack)

                          Cheers

Its the plastic housings that crack and then they arc across the gap. I have repaired them temporarily with araldite and silicone, but they always break again.

I threw about 4 broken ones out last week
