    You can't actually fry an ECU, unless your putting more voltage through it which is physically impossible if you change the data on the map, common sense really. I think its got more to do with the tuners not being happy enough with the stock ECU, whether thats got to do with the existing map or the functionality of it I reckon they're going stand-alone simply because it can make more power reliably at those higher boost levels.

    And alot of OEM vw stuff such as throttle bodies, coils and idle actuators aren't actually adjustable, badgolfiebad for instance is running on Supra coilpacks, R34 GTR throttle bodies and aftermarket idle actuators among other things.

      i think its the same sort of issue with other cars ECU's when you put too much air into and engine with stock ECU, its sensors are picking up readings that are outside its parameters. so it doesnt know what to do. thats all a chip does i think, just gives it wider parameters to work with.
      thats my understanding of it anyway.

      like on my mates MR2, he just put a smaller pulley on it to make higher boost with his supercharger, he said it will make it 12 pounds instead of 7 or something but if you go any higher than 16 it wont know what its doing and run real crap.

        agree..
        my mate's turbo charged (7Psi) Honda civic running on standard ECU...if you floor it..the engine light comes on and..the car starts to behave weird..

        strange...but from the setup i am looking at..they come with aftermarket chips (C2Motorsport/Giac).

        Do you guys know if these chips have tunablity? or just plug and play (pray).
        Tuning a car after doing something major is must (from my point of view).
        Any aftermarket full tunable or piggyback (like apexi neo) for VW Golf?

            Why pay about $1000 plus tuning for a haltech interceptor, when you could get a full standalone for 1500ish depending on brand plus tuning.

            The problem running any boost on the stock VR6 ecu, is that the air mass meter can only out put a certain voltage (5V i think). On a standard engine it is already putting out 4-4.5V at about 6000rpm. So if you increase the amount of air it will still only output 5V. Also the injector drives in the ecu won't be able to handle running the injectors at a higher duty cycle foe extended periods of time.

              im pretty sure it is 5 volts, same with all control units i believe.
              how would you get around this? would a air mass metre get around this? with the right tuning to account for it ofcourse

                supose you could use an air mass meter off like a v8 a4 or something that has similar hp to your expected hp. Or do what VF do and use a 'MAF clamp', which alters the output sent to the ecu to a different curve. Then they have a special tune to cope.
