  • Timing Problem

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

Jsut put my cyclinder head back on etc filled here up with coolant ($34 worth of g12) and my car sounds like **** under acceleration. I only drove it 200m up the road and though gee that doesnt sound right.

Got back in the garage put a timing light on and its seems at least 5 degrees advanced Is this normal?

It could just be me and im a little hesistant but im unsure. Car is heaps more quiet than before due to no head problems.

    What do people reckon?

Just checking with you guys before Dad gets home.

Is it pinging? Clattering noise? Id advance it till it pings then back off a bit. You could have adjusted the dissy timing when you took the head off.

OK as thought and recommended by Loon the timing was out on the dissy. Took me a while to get the bolt loose on the base of the dissy due to all the crap in the way of my 13mm ring spanner. Gave it some tweakage sounded heaps better.

To double check put a timing light on and much better

Down side my car is so much quieter whilst ideling

There is a trick to keepoing the timing right when the belt has been off for future reference. On the Aux pulley that drives your oil pump and dissy mark it and the block. When you go to put the belt on turn the aux pulley a tooth to the right and fit the belt, pull the belt up onto the camshaft pulley and when doing so you are putting tension on the long side of the belt which in turn will turn your aux pulley till the marks line up. This way the dissy is exactly where it was and all the slack is on the tensioner side, tension it up and you are done. Never fails. Remember some of the later engines the dis is locked with a pin and you cant turn it , so i would use this method regardless. Have seen many a cherry red exhaust due to wrong timing.
              Cheers
