  • Finally!!!!!

    Hey ppl,

Finally i managed to get hold on an uber immaculate 97 Gunmetal Grey VR6. (thanks to someone from the forum for the heads up!).

    Pictures will be up soon!

I sent the car down to VW Village for a pre-purchase inspection...George there was awesome, honest and reliable. Said that the car was in a damn good condition for its age...so yeah..got it!

    Next on the list...mods:

Suspension: Blistein shocks + springs? Coilovers ?
    Intake : CAI or SRI?
    Exhaust: Headers back...or custom?

I am pretty new to VW..as i was always into hondas....so much inputs as possible and a good direction!

    Cheers

    chock!

Dyldo - Yeah..Mike's a Champ..i met NICK...took a ride in his "ahem" AMG...hahaha..will be meeting mike again to tight up some loose ends. Will be having coffee with Nick...join us.

JoeVR - Nope..the car is from north Sydney.

So ..i have brought my moding/tuning mentality over from honda to VW. PPL please point me to the direction of brands.

          first on my list:

          1) Suspension (firmer ride + better handling) + brakes...
          2) Tyres = RE001s!!!!! Sick tyres...1.14 in the wet at wakie =)
          3) Intake - Brands ? K&N pod, Apexi?
          4) Exhaust...if i don't go turbo then...Custom at westside mufflers? or HiTech? from headers back? (i not so sure if headers will make a diff..i know honda does..TODA FTW)

I need some opinion...FI on a VR6..the chassis and the geabox are not meant to take the extra torque...true of false? What can be done?

Pictures when i change the plates + suspension ????

            Congrats mate. Cherish it!

Suspension - what are you looking for (performance vs. slamming it)? What's your budget? Brakes, the 288mm should be a decent setup already but you can always go for the slotted/drilled rotors and performance pads.

Intake - most people swear by the BMC intake, but you can always do the whole pod intake or mod the stock airbox and replace the panel filter with a hi-flow K&N one.

Exhaust - extractors on the VR6 are already a good design as I hear from others. Most have just removed/replaced components from the cat-back.

FI on VR6 - definitely not many around Australia but from build threads in VWVortex.com (kinda like your hondatech.com for Hondas), most retain the stock 02A gearbox and fit a heavy duty clutch and LSD. As for bracing, a set of swaybars, tower brace, and heavy duty engine/suspension mounts is sufficient for a respectable hike in power.
            Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
            Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

Yeah Ray pretty much said it, also consider things like coil-packs, leads, spark plugs and electrical items don't tend to last as long in VR6's due to the engine heat it produces in the bay.

I have RE001's on my VR6 as do a number of other members of this forum and they are a fantastic tire for money, with great grip and literally zero road noise.

              Have fun !

Ian from rennenhaus has got me a great deal for suspension...

The car has not much power in the lower revs... so for more low end power..supercharger? Was wondering how much would that set me back? 3 to 5k?

                decisions.

Probably got more do to with the leads, coilpack, spark plugs needing replacement more than anything else. Mine now pulls like a train at low RPM will minimal throttle.

I would start with the service and maintainence before looking at sinking 5-6k in a supercharger kit.

Congrats on picking up a nice unit! Werent you lamenting not being able to find one last week?

I have extractors on my vr6. They make zero difference. The rest is 2.5" cat back funtimes which is very nice ^_^

I have a BMC CDA which is awesome. BMC are THE filter as far as I'm concerned. They dont make most of the filters for F1 teams for no reason!!

If you are looking at doing mods well and with good money then look at coilovers if you havent already. I've got KW V2's, worth every cent.

I agree with everything else mentioned in this thread about bits tho.

Good luck with your modding and post some pix asap!

chock - Mike's VR6's engine electrics are literally 2 weeks old. he had an amazing amount of cleaning and maintenance done to it. not sure on coilpacks but leads and plugs are all brand new (probably 300kms old) and has had a full recond of all the injectors. should be amazing. anyway, post pics dude!!!
