  • VR6 rattling from engine

    hey,
my vr6 has a rattling noise coming from the engine when accelerating and deaccelerating and when cruising at highway speed. The vw guy i go to thought it was the belt tensioner bearing so i had that replaced, no change at all. its also running a bit ruff and seems a bit under powered with a lot of hesitation over 4000rpm plus missing at idle!!! the mechanic says its not the timing chain but i think i might be, the sound seems to be coming from around the coil pack side of the engine

    has anyone had similar problems???
want to get it sorted before something major happens!!!\

    cheers

Sounds like timing chain to me, there is other things it could be of course but when a timing chain lets go its a big $$$ fix. Better be safe than sorry and get it checked IMO. The original timing chain guides are known to fail, how many k's on the engine?

the engine only has 130,000k on it.

Still possible if the chain guide and or tensioner have let go and it is a COMMON fault. The updated guides are different hence addressing the issues from the original setup.

this is the timing chain noise, sounds like marbles shaked in a can at low revs, then gets inaudible at raised revs.

Unfortunately I think it's double guys...

I did my own timing chains, and even then when the dollar was AWESOME and I bought all my stuff from GAP, it cost me about 250 for parts alone (plus more for the new clutch cos you may as well do that while you're there).

A mechanic will need a fair few hours to do the job properly, and most will charge a fair bit for that sort of stuff. Then you have to think about where they get their parts from and how much they charge for it.

Last time I heard of timing chains being done I heard 1200.

And the running rough may be that it has skipped on the sprocket, seeing that heaps on the vrs now, guides, and tensioner lets go and it skips the timing, this makes them run rough as. All that said that is low ksss, has it had its oil changed regular?????? makes it a bit hard on here not hearing the noise. We could all be jumping , but the running rough is a worry.
                    Good luck
