  • Tims Purple VR6

Hey all, I don't get the car until Sat morning, but thought I'd start a thread now due to boredom.

I've picked up a 1994 Golf VR6, it's charcoal purple in colour, it'll be my first car and since I haven't had a car to learn on much, I'm still on my L's as well Won't take long to cure that however.

    List of current mods/changes:
    • Golf 5 Style Smoked Headlights
    • Smoked Crystal Side Indicators
    • Crystal Front Indicators and Fogs
    • Remus 2 1/4" Cat Back Exhaust, Straight to to Rear Muffler & Twin 2.5" Tips
    • Bonrath 2 Piece Front Lip
    • K&N Flat Pad filter with Custom Airbox Mod
    • Magnecor 8mm Leads
    • NGK Iridium Spark Plugs
    • Jamex Speedlift Kit
    • ARP Headbolts
    • SACHS VR6 Clutch kit
    • AFP Timing Chains
    • Piranha Alarm
    • JVC hu, front/rear speakers

Plans for near and far future:
    • Suspension
    • Alpine hu
    • Sub/amp
    • Rear sway
    • Front strut
    • Sharan antenna
    • Stickers
    • 16/17" wheels
    • Interior leather fixing

With suspension, I was keen on coilovers until I found out that springs/shocks are half the price, so I'm keen to hear about good combo's that I should look at, and how much they are. I'm after a height that will eliminate the big gap between wheel and arch, without rubbing the wheel while turning, and bottoming out on every bump or whatnot. This sort of setup looks good.

I ordered a VWWatercooled.org sticker 2 weeks ago almost, but it hasn't arrived yet, is this normal?

That's about it for now, hopefully I can make it to the cruise on the 29th as well, if not in my car then in my friend's Polo.

    Advert pic of car.

    cheers
    Tim

Oh nice, you ended up buying Tristan's car in the end! Hope it all goes well for you mate

Oh and about suspension...I don't know where you're getting your prices but there are a few different sets of coilovers that are as cheap as decent spring/shock setups now man!!

Nice buy - love the colour (and was hoping that would be on the market for another 4-6 weeks so I could buy it!)
Coilovers - do you like Kidney's shaken or stirred? Test them out before you buy - I would be looking at Eibach's (like the black one on carsales - low enough to give the look and a fair chunk of the handling without the harsh ride. My experience with coilovers has all been on subies - maybe VW's are better ones.

Looks very nice mate, nice buy. You will have alot of fun in the VR, MK3s are awsome cars and great fun to drive with a few nice suspension mods

I'm running a set of HotTuning coilovers which have been great so far. Not as harsh and bumpy as alot of other coils I've ridden on, plus they are very reasonably priced and cheaper than alot of spring/shock combos. PM evorobin if your interested in a set.

Look forward to seeing the build up on this

I have a friend who has hard race spec coils and they jump on every single little bump, but handle so well. Is there some online shop that I can check out prices on different brands?

Yes, my friend just got these put in his Polo, they are much softer than the coils mentioned above, but still let the car sit nice and low and elminate body roll. Evorobin quoted me $850 to my door, then I'd have to get onto Jmac for an install price.

A setup such as yours, how much would that cost me? Ideally the less I spend the better, as I'm not after a track spec car, if that combo gets me similar results as say the hottuning coilovers, and for half the price or something, then that'd be cool.

haha yea it's a 3 year list sort of, so not going to get it all at once

Yes I'll probably order one for myself and my mate soon.

I really like that colour and even more since it has a leather interior. You might find the mods youre consideringl will take you a lot longer than you think because VR's can have costly maintenance. I'm interested in the exhaust system youve got on there, if you could get some pics or even better - some video, that would be nice.

Na not leather interior, when I said fixing the leather I was referring to steering wheel and shifter.

It's a 3 year list, so hopefully will get it all done eventually, in no hurry though.

Yea I'll get pics/vids when I get the car, which now looks like it'll be next week, not this sat, as the owner was unable to get the rwc done and it's so hard finding a time that suits everyone unfortunately

I bought my setup second hand off of a member here mate..He paid 1100+ for it all up back when the dollar was good. You'd be hard pressed to find something worth buying in the spring/shock combo for less than at least 800 i reckon, but that's just my opinion. I'd say you should have a look and get coilovers, because they're just an easier option for our cars for some reason..

Also consider some of the non-dampening adjustable coils available, such as hottunings or JOM, you can get a set for under 500 au landed if you look hard enough

The ride is only harsh if you wind them to the bottom, and then start cutting the strut tops

This is why we buy coils isnt it?!

All Jap coilovers are damb stiff! even when they're set to soft :/ Maybe their roads are nicer over there?!

Hey Tim, congrats on the purchase! it must be killing you to have to wait another week Hopefully you can make it out Sunday

The only bit of advice i have with modifying is dont skimp on parts, the most expensive way is the cheapest way Go coilovers because if you go a cup kit/sping shock combo, i guarantee you wont be 100% happy with its stance and then your stuck with it
