Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • What The Coolant ???

    Hey All,

Was wondering if someone could tell me what the plastic pipe is on the front side of the vr6 engine. It carries coolant and has a small connection to a U shaped piece of hose. This bit has decided to bust off so I need to know what the pipe is called so I can order a replacement. Also approximate cost and is this a common thing? Car only has 125000 k's. I don't understand why something that would suffer from fatigue due to being heated and cooled was ever made of plastic.

    Cheers

Have spoken to the VW dealer**** and they tell me it is just called a 'water hose' and it is around the $200 mark. I have a pic but can't be arsed re-sizing it or hosting it to display it. Thanks..

You cant post pics straight to any forum, you need to go via a hoster for virus issues.

I use xs.to and you dont need to do anything, not even join. Just load your pic to them and copy the link to the forum. Takes a moment.

We are better able to help if we see a pic.

Lots of the plastics on the VR6 are brittle as the engines run pretty hot expect to replace more of them in the future, in my experience.

The thermostat housing at the other end of that pipe is brittle and will break too.

VR6 Heat and plastic does not mix. Plus the bits are hard to get at, so rarely get changed.
