  • 1.8cl - vr6 swap

Hi everyone. Been browsing the forums for a while and i finally thought i would register to ask for some advice

I currently have a golf cl 1.8l. Rims, coils, system, minor mods its looking good, just obviously its slow. My friends and i are all into the car scene and have links for mechanical help. But we really dont know wat we are doing.

Whats needed from a vr6 half cut so it works in a cl. is it worth it? its been months and i cant find a decent whole vr6 for sale. Also do the bucket seats from a vr6 half cut fit within the rails of a cl?

    Thanks guys.

Pics of your beastie? Location? There may be a nice vr for sale in your area. Easier than an engine swap..

Seats from a VR6 will fit a CL no problems. For a VR6 swap into a CL, swapping out the subframe from a VR6 is recommended, along with the drivetrain and suspension gear to run the bigger brakes (you can still use your current coilovers). Engine obviously, gearbox, wiring loom, radiator, dash cluster... is there anything else?

I agree with Joe's sentiments - there were no locally available two-door VR6s but plenty of four-door examples.

Yeah I'd take your mk3 stuff and put it on a suitable VR if it isn't a 2-door. I'm not sure what the ballpark figures are for an engine swap, but i THINK Loon sold a motor for 1.5k or so, if you can't do the work yourself I'm gonna guess at a smidge under 6-7k (cos I can't be bothered finding the threads on this forum hehe)

Oh, check the auctions. Wrecks pop up once in a while.

You`ll need to modify VR6 seats to fold forward in a 2 door CL.

In theory, you just unbolt the VR6 subframe with engine and box, widetrack suspension and brakes and bolt it into your CL.

In practice that is a big lump of car and is hard to do without a hoist....

You should swop over the rear subframe too for the widetrack and swaybar.

You`ll need a VR6 fuelpump and obviously the engine wiring loom and Dash Cluster.

If you use a 1994 VR6 loom there is no immobilizer, if you use a later one you will need the key and immobilizer too.

Worth thinking about how long your car will be in pieces for. Public Transport sucks.

Also its hard to find a VR6 with an intact front, most wrecks have front or side damage, so you will then need other parts like wishbones and driveshafts which can be hard to find.

              Good Luck.

Wait, you're thinking of buying that for the sole intention of ripping out its engine only?

AHHH! That VR6 looks immaculate but major turn-off is the auto box!

                      Can't swap wheels!

                      CL is 4x100 and VR6 is 5x100

I'll fill you in more about swaps later, but we all must know...is it a 2 door?

If not, it's not worth the trouble!

Hey! I'm a Golf Mk3 Cl (97) owner and I was considering swapping to a vr6 engine aswell. I later found out that it would cost alot more then actually buying one so i threw that idea out of the window. Though recently I've been thinking what if i turbocharged it instead? Does anyone have any ideas on how i could go about it or better yet, know anyone that has done it? All feedback and comments on this idea welcome. Cheers!
