Advice: Mk3 2L Golf GL Auto

In the market for the above for my fiance. Found a very nice example at a dealer on the Northern Beaches.

Besides the K's (127, 235) is there anything specific i should be on the lookout for?? Its a white 3 door looks very clean. The dealer says its got log books with regular service etc. Im going to test drive it tomorrow.

How reliable is this model? Advice needed!

No, we did...but none in 3 door

It's been said before that these models are theoretically more reliable than their variables (GL, VR6) because there's less in them to go wrong. When you test drive it tomorrow, just be on the ball with any noises that may be around, and check things like you would on any used car. If it drives okay, then it should BE okay

Ive got a 96 CL and mechanically it has been great, the only problems ive had are ignition switch and a/c compressor. Had to get a rebuilt compressor which costs $$$ so make sure the one ur testing has it nice and cold. Good thing is that it has manual windows which means no broken ones. Also make sure heater is working, thats another big job u dont want to do.


Other than that gl with it, while the cl isnt jaw dropping power the bonus is that i regularly get 600k's to the tank driving to work (mostly highway tho).

Auto Gearboxes are getting old now and costly to repair.
Get a manual one if possible.
If you must go auto, make sure it changes perfect and has no issues.

I have had a 1.8CL since new. Mines been amazingly solid and reliable. 330,000 km now. Manual. Had virtually nothing go wrong for 150,000 k.
One with regular servicing should be a good bet I've seen them around with 80,000 km or less.

Starter went about 150k, fuel pump about 190k, Coil pack around 220k.Aircon 330k.

The best car I've ever owned and as reliable as anything you can name. The 1.8 is a bulletproof motor.

Sweet. How costly is costly? Mine's starting to complain. A/C condensers gone too. Woohoo.
