I would seriously consider it,having owned a 1988 GOLF1,Citigolf in South Africa,and a Vento,or rather Jetta 3 in America and one in South Africa.
The A3 is a superior car,but very diffirent to an A1.
Much safer,with lots of equipment,as in comparison the A1 has no features...luxury or safety.
Burn the Mk1 and with the insurance money, get a schmick Vento.
Drive it around revelling in the crash protection, Air Con and power steer.

You'd be hard pressed to find a decent manual Vento for under 5k as well...
