  • How much to get a mk3 CL like this?

    Hey all,

I was flicking through the photos in the mk3 appreciation thread above and came across this one of a 1.8 CL.

What would be the costs involved in getting a car like this?

    mk3 golf CL ~$5,000
    Wheels ?$2k?
    Shocks/springs ?$1k?

Then insurance, like $800/yr? Just wondering if it will work out cheaper than buying a VR6 for ~$7k, as well as in terms of insurance/maintenance, etc.

I would imagine he's running decent suspension on there as he's fairly low. So maybe for something like that more than a grand after bringing it out here. I'm a bbs newb but I think those are RM's. Hard to find here I'm pretty sure. Looks like theyve been refinished and then painted. I think with tires as well you might end up spending over $2000.

The car is an english one and I've seen the before and after pics of it. The before pics don't even look like the same car, was a totaly ****box that he probably picked up for a under a thousand quid.

Even if you end up spending more than what you said in the original post I reckon you're on the right track with doing suspension and wheels first. I think cars with other mods done first look weird personally.

I actually thought they were Simmons wheels to begin with... I think you could get the same look with a set of Simmons wheels, which typically go for much less and are more easily acquired than a set of BBS There are a lot of springs/shocks/coilovers even on the market that can get you where you want to be, and I know for a fact that a few of us mk3ers have gone the cheaper option and we are all loving the ride. There's HotTuning for under 1k, there's always second-hand stuff to be looking out for; your options are pretty varied with suspension!

If you're not worried about lack of power from the CL, I'd say do it

Oh, and in my experience I'd say if you didn't want to bother fixing things on a VR6 then don't get one. They're worth it if you're into cars and you're willing to make sacrifices to get them running nice, but if you just want a decent daily with a good look then you would probably be much better off with less maintenance etc from a CL.

genuine wheels and tyres would easily be 2-2.5K. could get rep's or something a little bit less popular kinda thing, maybe 1.5-2K for a decent package.

Suspension. hottunings are hard to go by for value for money, and with a 12cm drop, that should be plenty enough slammge.

You should be able to get a GL for 5K. but that all depends on condition kms etc etc etc.

But that look on a mk 3, i'd say, have at least 3K to spare

I'd also hazard a geuss a CL/GL should be cheaper to insure than a VR6 too, and cost less to run. Basically, you could do that for 7K or less too a CL/GL. so do it, don't buy a VR6! just imo anyways!

CL are great if you are new to cars as I am. Cheap to run, easy to work on, very basic, economical, cheap to insure etc.

That is how id like my CL to turn out

I'm with James. There's less to go wrong with the CLs and I reckon the 1.8 is a nicer motor than the 2.0. (Having one of each in a pair of Mk1s)

Yes very true most will need some comestic TLC. Full cut n polish, rubbers and geberal wear n tare fixed/replaced.

Mine has a few things to be fixed still but hey it wouldnt be a project if it didnt need things fixed...

Alrighty, putting some figures together here.

                          Mk3 GL $5.5k http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars...&Cr=3&trecs=11

Wheels $1.3k (does 17x7.5 fit?) if so, which of these?:

                          Hottuning coilovers $1100 fitted

Stereo, no idea, but $1k budget tops (good front speakers, size?, average rear, small sub/amp, headunit that I can control/charge ipod from)

Insurance: $600? through parents + aami

So total: $9.5k If I can save enough, get it all done at once, otherwise wheels/coils first, then stereo bit by bit after.

                          Thoughts?

                            Do it! hahah.

I did things the other way around though...I was more musicially inclined before I worried about my cornering so I threw a soundsystem in there....then I got suspension, then I changed my wheels. I'd definitely say go the suspension first because it's the best feeling for the money Wheels will also probably wear off on you as they would with anyone so they shouldn't be such a priority.

For the wheels, I'd rather something in smaller diameter but a little wider if you wanted the same look as the first pic you posted up, e.g. Sportmaxx wheels.

                              Sportmaxx 501 15x8 ET15

                              Sportmaxx 513 15x8 ET0 and 15x7 ET15

Both are selling at $199/wheel @ JDMyard.

The ET0 won't be that suitable for our cars, but the 15x8 ET15 will sit nicely with a little poke up front and back.
