  • VR6 trims...product to revive?? plz help

Hi there, the VR6 I inherited has been parked outside all its life....doesnt look too bad cos that means a million other *****heads have driven in to it over the last dozen years and nearly all the paint bar the roof is new!!

1 prob is the black trim on the rear bumper is quite faded and grey....i tried the usual armourol and 2 dollar shop tyre shine....small improvement but still grey not black....

what is the best product you've used to bring back badly UV damaged plastic??

    thanks!!

Covered many times before mate A lot of us swear by Kiwi Shoe Polish, available at Woolies/Coles. It comes with its own applicator and is very cheap. Easy to apply, and lasts much longer than Armor-All.
    Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
    Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

options for me, in order of preference -

      1. KIWI shoe polish (Target, Woolworth, Coles etc.).... i've use the stuff in the sqeeze bottle with the sponge on the top, works a treat.

      2. Forever Black (Autobarn, Supercheap Auto etc.).....more expensive than shoe polish with pretty much the same result IMO.

Kiwi Shoe polish rep chiming in hahah.

I'm fanatical about converting people to shoe polish for their bumpers. Basically the stuff sticks on like a paint. It doesn't come off for months!! Here's what it looks like freshly coated (and it looks the same for months after, no joke):

To apply it, first wipe the bumpers clean of dirt etc, then just use the applicator on the end of the bottle and smear it over your bumpers like you're painting them. Try not to get it on the paint (if you do, just wipe it off with a damp cloth asap) and just go over the bumpers until you're satisfied with the coverage. Let it dry and you're done!

Yeah the rear wing is a different plastic...non porous so the shoe polish doesn't sink in Mine still looks crap

I used to heat the plastic with a heat gun. You have to be careful not to melt the bumper obviously.

Once you have it pretty much black all over then the other methods work much better.

                  Hi Mate ,
The best stuff to use is k & h Trim and Bumper paint goos ozzie product and cheap from autobarn just get some of there pre treatment to take off any wax or polish and appy like spray paint i have a black vr6 and i tell you what its the best the problem with shoe polish is it eventually fades just like when you polish shoes and dust sticks to it , all up it will cost about $ 30 to do the wole car one can is just enough.
                  hope this is helpful.

The paint will flake/wear off eventually too, since it's not clearcoated. I've done it before and prepping it (sanding, getting it all clean and spraying it in a clean and dustless area at home... not easy!) was a pain in the ass. Applying the shoe polish for < 5 minutes a month is just much more easier. I'm lazy though.
