  • Mk3 GTi Golf - German Import

Came across one of these for sale in Sydney. Its a red Mk3 GTi thats a private RHD import (been here for over 10 years). I've never seen any Mk3 Gti's knocking about, did VW sell any in Aus?

Any pointers I should look for in a Mk3?

    Thanks

    Steve

Hey Steve, welcome to the forum. First of all, there are countless threads that quite comprehensively list what to look out for when purchasing a mk3; if you search in the mk3 forum with the search function you'll find heaps

Secondly, as far as I'm aware there are no mk3 GTI's that call Australia home. They even got to New Zealand and not here But I do know there's a select few imports knocking about; they are rare cars, and to be perfectly honest I don't know much about them at all, so I'm not any more help than that

If its a burgundy colour it was an aussie vr6 converted to a 16v gti by oli on here. If its not the one then itll be the first ive heard of as they didnt sell em here. Got any details about it? Where its for sale (unless u wanna buy it and dont want anyone else buying it )

Look for 5 stud wheels as all GTIs have the Plus axle set like a VR6. If it's 4 stud, it's not a GTI.

            PM me for the number

The guy who owns it left a message on my splitty when it was parked at Castle Hill. I called him up and he's an older gent who was looking for a splitty and told me he had a Mk3 GTi that he's had for years for sale as well. All I know is that its a European import (UK I guess) and its in good condition. He didn't mention a price but said Aussie models go for $4000 to $5000, so I would think its around that.

My brother in law has passed on it and gone for something else, so if anyone wants this just PM me and I'll pass on Allan's phone number. Be prepared for a long conversation though, he likes to talk!

            Cheers

            Steve

                    If it's a 16v import (german built)

Look out for.. 2slat grille,MFA,OEM foglights,Smoked tailights, leather steering wheel, gearshift boot and handbrake cover like the VR6 gets. Might have different seats, like black mk4 style recaros...otherwise it should have the VR6 'Sport seats' If it's the 8v the leather trim might not be there, oh yeah if it's ex-uk new the speedo/odo will be in mph/miles

Best way to check the origin, buildplant/spec is to get the vin and run it.

FYI Some of the real early South African built 8v GTI's have 4stud hubs and do not have the 'Plus' widetrack.

Or he may be confused as to what is a real GTI and it will turn out to be a GL.

Someone should go and look at it.

So how different are imported MK3 8V GTI's vs a Aus delivered GL?
Same car and engine, just with better suspension and a body kit?
