I know someone replaced their door lock barrel but I reckon it would be a bit harder to change over the ignition barrel. not sure what you mean by switch... Matty T in perth put his own green 'START' button in but i think thats a bit different.

You would need to change the pins and possibly the immobiliser reader as well if you mean the barrel you turn the key in...

Replacing the ignition switch doesn't require messing around with the key barrels.

Basically the job involves removing the U-joint bolt near the pedals so you can basically pull the steering column out. This will give you access to the small Phillips-head bolts that hold the ignition switch on. These are a bitch to get off, but I found it easier to use those jeweller-screwdrivers. Installing everything back in is the reverse process, but remember to put the spring back in to the U-joint bolt. It's difficult but it's doable!

It's been covered on the forums before. If you want more info, give the forums a search.

Tip: point the steering wheel dead straight before u take the u joint out.

I would do it by removing the wheel and going in from the top.
You need a puller for the splined bolt though.
Happy to do it for you if you dont want to mate.

You don't have to remove the steering column at all for his job.

Just remove the steering wheel, the steering column trim's & indicator/wipe stalk asssembly & you should be able to take it from there.

There is also a sheer bolt that hold's the steering lock assembly that will have to be replaced.

I haven't done one of these on a mk3 in a while & can't remember if the lock assembly has to be removed just like on a mk1 or mk2 to remove the switch.

Hopefully Loon or gtimk5 will chime in to clarify.

That sheer bolt u can just get some pliers and turn it, its not held in hard. Either way works, i took the column out as i dont have a bearing puller.

x2. I tried getting to it from the top and got stuck at the point where I needed the puller.

I followed a How To from Vortex and did it all in about half an hour. Hardest part was getting the wheel back on straight once I pulled the whole steering column out! Make sure you get the right screwdriver though for removing the actual ignition switch, its a bit fiddly otherwise!
