  • Cooling fans on after engine stopped

I would like to get a poll from people with MK3's who's engine fans come on after the engine has stopped?

    My situation:

Approx after every 3 - 5 medium journeys (20km) when the engine has stopped/turned my cooling fans come on approx 2min - 3min after the engine has stopped...

The fans run for approx 5 - 10min....Then my car alarm goes off as I think it senses a drop in voltage...

Reading in the manual I see that the cooling behavior is somewhat normal, but I think it is far to frequent in my case.

I suspect that I need to replace a thermostat sensor or something like that.

    Comments?

you're right, it's partly normal, but my Dad has a volvo that runs for 15 mins after the car is off.

what does the engine temp sit at when you are driving? my engine (1.8L) sits at a very constant 90 while driving, 93-5 in heavy traffic. I'm assuming that most other engines would be the same.

If your temp is closer to the red line than the cold side, i'd be looking at the temp sensor.

You have to remember that the car is german and what usually takes 5 minutes to cool down over there takes a bit longer of here.

as for the alarm, you are probably right about the voltage. You may want to look at getting an auto electrician to work out a way of bypassing that somehow...

Mate it's 100% normal. I thought my VR6 radiator fans were buggered when they were doing this but it was a hot period so it just used the fans for longer.

Seriously, you have nothing to worry about - that is, except the alarm

          Ok, thanks for the feedback.

Yes, when driving the temp rarely moves off the center.

Regarding the alarm, it is a Repeller... I guess I need to find someone with that sort of experience.

Are u sure it detects the voltage drop and not just the vibration of the fans. Thatd be more simple as u can adjust that threshold so it wont go off on small vibrations.

              Good point.

Not sure if it has any adjustments...

I don't think it has a shock sensor... just the door and ultrasonic sensors..

I am really struggling to find any documentation for any repeller alarm system...

where abouts are you? There is a repeller dealer in Hornsby , Sydney.
my car has a repeller alarm fitted but my alarm does not go off after use.

                  It's normal.

Mine can kick in 5-10 mins after I've stopped and parked up.

Just junk the repeller allarm. They are nasty and cause heaps of problems when they get a bit old.

No-one could steal your car without the coded key anyway.

I've got a Repeller as well and, as you mentioned, when the fans stop after a few minutes with the alarm on, it goes off. It also does it randomly now and quite a lot. But I think it does have something to do with the voltage, because upon starting the car now, sometimes the clock resets.

looks like you are going to have to get another battery and rewire both of them into the boot

and and this day and age with global warming and all that, we don't want to be wasting power.... so you'll have to get a completely new sound system to go with the new battery!

while you are at it you'll need to rework the interior to fit all the new speakers.

new interior means new paint job, but then if you are going to get a new paint job, you may as well shave the engine bay while you are at it.

when you have the engine out to do the shaved bay, you may as well add a turbo on it, redo the exhaust, brakes, rotors, LSD, Clutch and Gearbox...

So basically, to fix the alarm, I reckon it would cost you about $25,000 easy

Malteser - looks like a new battery will solve your problem.

Me too possibly... i need to run a voltage gauge on the battery to monitor what's happening when the fans come on...
