Golf 3/Passat VR6 Auto Gearbox -- Same???

Could you put an auto gearbox from the vr6 passat into an auto golf mk3 vr6 without much problem?? Someone told me they go in different directions

EDIT: Golf is 95' and the Passat is 96' is there anyway to do a swap.

Check your gearbox codes mate and see if they will , and someone is getting mixed up with a 3B passat which is in fact front wheel drive in line. The Passat you are talikng about is in fact Transverse.
