Door rattle/noise

My front passenger door had 2 noises, and general noise on the smallest of bumps and a larger clink/rattle on bigger bumps.

I managed to fix the first sound, the clip that help the 2 cross cables in the door has fallen out and the 2 cables were rattling on small movements.

I cannot locate the second sounds.

What the noise sounds like:

Metallic, like glass on metal or metal on metal, a clink,

What I have done:

- Removed the door card
- Retentioned all the bolt on the door
- Retentioned all the bolts on the window lifter


Any suggestions?

could be the door trim itself, i have the same rattle in both my mk3's but havn't had time to fix it yet

door trim/door card completely removed.... metal/glass clinking sounds still there...

If you wind down the window is there any movement in the glass from side to side. You might need to check and see if the glass is held firmly in the bottom track. I haven't worked on one of these personally but most have a channel arrangement on the bottom where the glass fits into with a rubber seal. It's a bit difficult to diagnose without hearing it, but all I can really suggest is to try (with the door trim off) pushing and pulling carefully on fixed and moving parts in the door to see if there is excessive movement or wear in any of the components. Obviously if there is you may need to replace a part or two. Another thought that just came to mind is are there any fixed pop rivets to hold the mechanism in place ? If so make sure they're not worn if they are you'll need to drill them out and put new rivets in to remove any play. Just some ideas anyways, let us know what you find !!

As Russ said, get the door trim off and just move parts INSIDE the door around to see if there's any movement. It could be something like your door latch, the window, window regulator....make sure there's nothing loose just sitting at the bottom of the inside of the door either.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have re tensioned the door handle spring, tightened all the nuts and bolts including the clamps that hold the window.

I have tested movement in the window (forwards and backwards).... but not left or right...

I get a slight rattling sound when my window is fully raised on the drivers side.

To get around this i tap the electric window button slightly and it nudges the window done i notch. There is no gap at the top of the window and its still water and wind tight.

I find the window is rattling against the top of the door, or the frame inside is knocking so this resolves it.

Try it.

Both my front windows do this, my money is on the loose bottom track OR the absence of support further up. Does it make noise when the window is fully closed as well?

its the window seal its either dried out or worn out, had the same problem on my golf gti mk2.

Seals look good and there is no movement left or right backwards or forwards.

Really frustrating...

I cannot seem to find it, but get a clink clink on decent bumps...

lol.....just use process of elimination. Secure one piece of moveable door-insides and go for a bumpy drive. If it stops the noise then you'll know what's making it...if it doesn't, secure something else and go for the same drive.

You'll find it, it's in the door so it's gotta be something inside.....obviously.. lol.

I have been driving around with the door trim and handles off for the last 3 weeks....

Removed the outside handle, remove the locking mech. tightened all observable bolts etc etc...
