Never seen one either , only just started seeing them on the 20v engines on the B6. US regulations are heaps tighter emission wise.

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ok yep.
Seems I mistook the PCV valve/heater element (on my VR) with an EGR valve.
My bad
Read about EGR for the Mk3 in the Bentley manual - guessing the American cars had them due to their tighter emissions regs.http://www.cardomain.com/id/sydvr6

Just been having a look at this old thread. Wondering if the problem has been fixed. I have the same symptoms and I'm pretty sure its a lifter, on cylinder 1 to be exact, but I get the rattle all the time. I know its defiantly not the exhaust. To the guy who said by removing the center exhaust it fixed it.... I doubt it fixed it, i'd say your car is just louder so you can't actually hear the rattle anymore.

I know this is a old thread but I had a similar issue with my 96 Vento.
I had a strange rattling which I thought was bad pinging or the exhaust cover. It turning out to be a cable linkage that was attached to the throttle body from an aftermarket cruise control that I had disabled previously.
I secured the cable away from the throttle body and now I don't have any rattling while accelerating between 1500-2000rpm.VW MK2 Golf GTI 8V 1991
