  • Problem: Ticking Noise under acceleration

    Hey guys!

As you may know, i'm running an ABF with an 02A gerbox.
Recently there has been an annoying ticking noise under acceleration only. The noise does not happen when cruising, or decelerating. It happens in any gear, and annoys the bejesus out of me!

I have so far done the following things:

Listened to head and bottom end with a screwdriver - normal operations there.
Taken off and driven without air filter - the ticking noise is not any louder.
Taken off and driven without starter motor (recently replaced) - no difference.
Inspected the extractors for leaks - nothing I can see

I'm now in the process of changing the gearbox oil, so long as I can get the freakin fill plug open, I've already cracked the drain plug, but there's no point draining if I can't fill!

    Any other ideas or tests???

    Thanks in advance!

Fill thru the speedo drive. just put the right amount of oil in.

Don't know about your noise unless its the diff rivets about to let go......

      Yeah....

      Great Idea!!

If it is g/box, Loon better have another ABF 02A lying around, then I can rebuild my current box with LSD and new selectors, etc... MMMM... I'd love that brand new factory shift again!

As per my Haynes manual, it's 2.2L.
Which means I just bought 5L for nothing, cause I have 2.5 sitting in my room already...Poop!

G/box oil changed via shifter selector...

          I still have the noise!

          Anyone?

I'm thinking it might be something engine related, or maybe it could be the throw out bearing.

I might have to do some skids and see if anything blows... At least that way I'll know what's wrong!

I had a ticking noise twice in the old Escorts and both times it was the exhaust manifold. First time was the gasket, second time was the extractor flange separated from the extractor tube. The easiest test to do for this is get a small piece of tissue paper and hold it from the top with a few centimetres hanging freely and hold it close to all the joints and different spots around the exhaust system and see if it starts blowing around. If nothing shows up the first time try getting a mate to partially cover the exhaust pipe (this puts more pressure thru the system and makes any leaks easier to notice). Hopefully, problem found .

Hopefully not the gearbox mate, I have spares on standby though, panic not

Strain your engine oil through an auto paint strainer and see what you find (painfully slow process, but a handy one nonetheless)...

Could it be the timing belt tensioner.

I'm going to have to keep testing, but I'm starting to get a feint burnt oil smell occasionally too...

                      This sucks!

                      But, thankyou very much guys!

ive had a ticking noise as well, and i found it to be the ignition timing, it was just present whenever i would acelerate, so i got the old size 13 spanner out loosened off the but just under the distributor, and then slightly twisted the distributor clockwise.

it seemed to fix the problem, but i was then majorly down on power, so i would drive for a bit, get out, change it slightly again, untill i finally found the sweet spot, where there is a nice power output, and no ticking..

the easier option is to get a light that will tell you the sweet spot, but thats no fun... and i didnt have one handy

                        just a thought
