  • VR6 strange noise

    Hi from RED ROCKET
I hope that some members can read this thread before somebody delete this (I think somebody have my suername and password and play silly games).
Ok lets go now: I have some strange and loud noise from top of my VR6 engine (VW Golf MK3 '95).
Start normally evry time, with no noise and after few minutes when become hot noise is look like diesel engine from top I think.
Running very well (I was drive yesterday up to 200 km/h to Gold Coast and back and there no any problem when drive. Put new oil and oil filter and flush oil too.
    Any sugestion will be help.
    Thanks guys.

Did you say the engine sounded like a diesel? The rpm rising and falling?

              is it timing chain noise?

did ya put the sump plug back in?

Timing chains sound rough on a VR when they are worn out. Could be a crap tensioner which I think is hydraulic. The flush might not have been a good idea.

I haven't had a VR6 so don't know them really well. It's a gearbox out job to do the chains though.

Piston slap is another VR problem, usually comes with high oil consumption too.

What oil did you use????? You might have a sticky hydraulic tensioner causing the chains to rattle, especially if it was ok before you changed the oil. If it has been getting crap oil previously or lack of and you put some nice stuff in you can shove the crap everywhere. The chain tensioner has little ports in it that can get clogged. Could be a noisy lifter or lifters. If it was the chain or guides it probably would have noisy already. Yeah i dont think the flush was a flash idea especially up the ks

Is the noise like a whistling noise which lots of trucks make?cause mine was doing this and it needed a new fan belt which wasn't much fuss at all.
