Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Exhaust Rubbers

My zorst rubers keep braking and the car is pregaz.

Nah, its about the 3rd set ive gone through. I had VT/VN common rubers on and they broke, then i ordered original VW ones and they broke, it took longer but they still broke, i got the exhaust checked and a thingo welded and replaced the couple of broken rubers and they broke. Im down to 1 out of 4 rubbers on the zorst.

Everytime i drive the car hard one brakes and then the others brake later on the next days. They heat up and stretch then cool down and harden.

How durable are the polyurethane rubers?

do you have a flex pipe in the exhaust??? they shouldn't be breaking cause of the "heat" they're designed with extreme temps in mind.

I dont think i have a flex pipe but im not sure. All i know is that when i drive it hard one brakes and then the others follow due to the extra stress.
I also sometimes smack the cat (sounds dirty) on speed bumps, dunno if that matters, i dont think it should.

i think if you dont have a flex pipe, what might be happening, is the exhaust is moving around too much, which causes extra stress on one of the hangers, which breaks and then the rest etc..

do you know which one breaks most/first?

One of the two that are just before the rear muffler. That was this time round, then because the last hanger was already streched it broke. But it can also happen the other way around.

First off check if you have a flex pipe. should be just after the headers/extractors, and only needs to be lik 3-4" long and look flexible and mesh like.

THe problem maybe is being caused by lack of flexi pipe IMO

Have you got a standard exhaust or other ? Standard exhausts dont really have a flex joint but a swivel joint coupled from the down pipe to the exhaust manifold. Tha cat is bolted straight to the downpipe.

Could be just alignment, what I mean is if the exhaust is sitting to far back its already putting strain on the rubber hangers. The exhaust should sit slighty forward in reference to the hangers looking from the side so when the car is moving the exhaust movement would just allow it to swing slightly towards the rear and hence not over stress the rubber hangers.

It is a standard exhaust. No flex pipe.

Today i fited 3 new figure 8 shaped hangers, drove the car all day long and they seem to be holding very well, still tight.

Alignment seems to be ok, its just as you say.

I will see how long it lasts.

On a happier note, the new chrome tips look sweet when siting properly and the cat seems to be undamaged from all the speed bump slaping.

                  Back from the depths!

These exhaust rubbers are BS! How in the hell are you supposed to stretch them over the hooks?
Is the ribbed looking bit the cat.? I know my system it at least missing a resonator (sounds like a race-car and crackles on overrun, bushpig style), and there's no flexy mesh bit either.
As far as I can tell it's rigid.

I don't want to go to the trouble of getting all these rubbers in only for them to brake in a months time.

Your car wont have a cat Jace.

There is a tgool (probably more than one) I've seen before, they were basically the handle part of the scissors connected to a small rod with a 'hook' on the end, to pull down on the rubber hanger.

IIRC, that ribbed bit is the factory flex joint. The popping and cackling could be due to a number of things, poor timing, overfuelling (on back off) smalls holes in the muffler/exhaust system. Check you muffler for rust spots (i'm guessing the exhaust is all standard so far..)

just a few ideas to look into!

I found I was replacing them constantly on my MK1 at the race track.

I tried OEM, OEM HD, OEM upgrade for Cat equipped cars, everything on the shelf at repco, supercheap etc.

                      Eventually I upgraded to these.

Bahn Brenner Motorsport - Exhaust Hanger w/ Chain Insert

They're a stock replacement with a length of small bicycle chain cast into the rubber.

                      No problems since.

Only just realized this is in the emkay2 section, sorry about that! Same shiz anyway.

Basically a straight pipe, so dunno if it's standard, I'm thinking it's missing something.

It was loud before, with a bit of crackling, but there was pretty rapid exhaust leak between the down-pipe and manifold.
I'm hoping that the volume and bushpig-steez were mostly because of the leak.

And Jarred, I made my own hook and pulled down with all my might! I get it so close, but just doesn't freaking want to!
Maybe if I drive it to a hoist, then use my entire body weight i might be able to stretch the rubber enough...
