As for the clutch, thanks for the info. I haven't worked on a clutch before so I may ask some stupid questions.
I believe the gearbox is from a Seat cordoba, which I know nothing about. Will do some digging to see if i can find what year model etc. I'm currently in class .

Is there any way I can identify what gearbox it is by getting eyes on it?
Find out who did the conversion. They should know what gearbox it is. Cordoba engines were all 1.8 i think... just a golf 2/3 drivetrain in a 6N Polo platform...

It was Camden GTI that did the engine conversion and i'm pretty sure the gearbox was sourced from them as well. The older one seized up or something.

I will get under the car and see if I can see a part number.

Found a bonnet! Brian out at GTI Imports managed to find one for me. I'll be doing the whole front end this weekend. There is one thing that is still confusing me about the task. What is this cracked part I've circled in the photo? Is it part of the big bumper setup? It just sits behind the bumper but everywhere I've looked so far on the net, other cars don't seem to have this.

Good to hear you got a bonnet sorted !
I'll take a look later at mine (as I still have the grill off the car) and see what the part is.
I don't recall seeing on mine.

That's the reinforcement between the bumper cover and the metal bumper bar!
Looks like the bar is band and the cover has returned back to its place!
              If that makes sense

Had a very busy Sunday taking the front of the car apart and putting it back together.
Marcin, I get what you mean, I got a pretty good photo of it here. The metal bar was bent like you said and it was so hard to get the plastic off! Bent it back for the time being until I find a straight one.

Anyway, the car looks much better!!! Biggest problem was getting the bonnet latch to line up properly so the bonnet would lock. Battled with that for a couple of hours. Turns out the donor slam panel I bought ended up being not as straight as I thought it was! (Much better than my original though!).

Thanks for all the help with this one guys.

Will post a finished pic once I wash the car! It's all greasy.

Good work Josh, good to see your getting stuck into itLooks a lot like my garage over the last couple of weeks !
I've had the same drama lining up the latch for the bonnet too, thought it was only me.
At the moment is locked shut until I work out how to release it.

I had a similar issue golfmeup. I forced the bonnet to lock and then the release wouldn't open it up. Had to poke a screwdriver up the hole in the latch to push it out. It was jammed in there due to the misalignment. Need to have the grill off though so you can access under the latch on the slam panel.
It closes fine now after a few adjustments.

Hi golf loon, are they 2 or 4 door and what interior are they?

Great work on the repair. You'll fly through the clutch. Just don't forget to tie up the drive shafts.

4 door. One is South African GTI rusty. Other is aussie delivered. Quite stripped. Got sets of good door trims and some pieces of seats but no sets. Have straight panels on shelf ready to go. Bargains for vwww members. No perfect drivers seats, window scrapers or roof moulds. Sorry. Everything else.

Good advice to tie up the driveshafts rallyenoel. I always cable tie the long one to the exhaust. Makes moving the box around heaps easier.

Sorry everyone, have had a busy week and long weekend. I will get a photo up of the finished job in the next couple of days. I finished with the bonnet and front end last Sunday. Took me and a couple of mates about 6 or 7 hours. it was much more fiddly than anticipated (particularly with getting the bonnet shut). Plus, I must admit i'm a beginner, I just like to learn how things work and embark on these missions myself. I imagine it would be a very quick job if your car is 100% straight.

I was just playing with the car trying to fix this hunting idle problem I've been having. Golf Loon, I spoke to you on the phone the other day about it and you suggested it was a vacuum leak. I've been looking into that, trying to hunt it down. No luck so far. A handy mate and I also tested the crank angle sensor with a voltmeter and it looks like its not signalling evenly? Anyone have any experience with this? I'm thinking I might try hunt down a distributor setup for a 2E engine.

Just to explain the issue further - The idle is hunting and the car sometimes stalls at lights. When driving, if i'm not giving it a few revs the car starts to jerk around a bit. If I put my foot down, it drives pretty smoothly... however I think I can feel a minor fluctuation in power, hard to say.

I should probably rename this thread.
