Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Help! Reverse has dissappeared from my mk2 gti!

So, yesterday i was parked in the city in my mk2 gti and when I tried to put my car into reverse it kept going into first no matter what I did. I then tried putting the car in first to see what was going on and it refused to go into first normally unless i pushed the gear stick down and into where reverse should be.
It's like first has migrated to where reverse should be and reverse has gone completely.

I use my car as a daily driver so I'm pretty keen to find out whats going on and to fix it ASAP!

Shift linkage is worn, especially the relay shaft.

As Red says, or ALL of the bushings may be worn.
Get a bushing kit of GAP or perhaps call Camden GTI.

This may help you visualize the linkage set-up.

I'm taking the car to Camden GTI today and I'll see how that goes.
