Service Time- Oil, plugs and filters to use?

Well service is over due by 2000 kms on the old 8V.

Not bad only just clocked 160K !

Im going to do the service myself this time and need advice on what everyone thinks is best oil, spark plugs and filters to use?

I used to run it with Mobile 1 synth, until a VW mechanic replaced it with Castrol GTX3?? Have been using that since without probs.

Spark plugs, not sure whats in there yet.

and filters?

Don't really want to use Valvoline or cheap brand ones and probably cant get them too easy for the MK2 anyways.

So any advice would be much appreciated.

Another Q. Reckon its worth installing a pod air filter for a few extra Horses or not?

Where abouts are you mate?

With oil, pretty much everyone on here uses something different really! and no-one is wrong. I'd go a 20w 50 if you engine's only done 160 000. There's no neeed to run any thicker as it's still pretty young. Brand wise, stick with Mobil Shell Castrol, and you'll be fine. No need to go synthetic.

for plugs, you can just go down to supercheap or whatever and look through thte books they have there and it'll have the code for which plugs you need, NGK seem pretty standard ones, if you want something a bit better, go for Bosch, a bit more expensive, but good stuff. and dont' for get to set the spacings

oil filter, You should be able to get one from repco, or your local VW workshop. Really, you should be able to get everything you need from Repco.

You may as well do the fuel filter, and air filter too while your at it. and if you're game, have a crack at the timing, if it needs it.

20w50? thats heeeaaps thick isnt it? i thought that 15w40 is more the go.

I agree the 2nd 50 pre fix resisting flow when hot but having 20w with it??? yeah too thick 15w40 magnatec good value at around $35.
IMO i wouldnt use a Repco oil filter on the DUb, use a Hengst, from OEM supplier or a VAG one for all the price difference its the go. Around $15 will get you a VW one mate.

My sound advice -

Never, ever use a ryco oil filter on any watercooled engine. Anytime Ive seen a Ryco filter on a vw it's blown the oil filter out! Early watercooled VW's run at twice the normal oil pressure of any other vehicle.

This is what I use in my mum's Mk2 1.8 Digifant.

Oil - Mobil Super XHP 15W-40
Oil Filter - Mann 719/5
Air Filter - Mann C31 152/1 (K Jet should be different)
Sparkplug's - Beru UXF79P (4 prong electrodes)
Fuel Filter - Bosch 0 450 905 030 (K jet should be different)

Cambelt - Conti tech 056 109 119A
Cambelt tensioner - Lemforder 026 109 243E

Never had any problem's with this stuff. It may be alittle more expensive & I have no problem paying for top quality stuff. Especially if it never gives you a problem.

All of the above is the same in all of my mk1's & Audi except the air filter's & the fuel filters are different.
I used to use a diesel oil filter (Hengst H 17 W 05 or Mann W940/25) in the mk1, as it hold's more oil & has better filtration.

yeah I probably stick to the quality stuff, i'm happy to pay a little more for the good stuff!!

I'll see what they have at the local repco's and supercheaps for oil and sparks, but i'll look up the euro parts shop for the filters.

I had dramas before on my air cooled beetle using a ryco oil filter.
So happy not to use them!!

nope in a mk 1, all pretty much the same engine though (the 8v's that is). I'm not so sure about going strong at 300K, but it does seemeto be doing alright so far. starting to sound tapety, but well you'd expect that!

I get all of my service parts from HSY Autoparts in Melb.

They should have all of those parts with those part #'s in stock.

Remember that the air & fuel filter's should be different being a K-Jet GTI.
