Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Flashing Oil Light - how to stop?

    Hi all,

A quick question: Just performed an oil change and put a new filter on my '91 GTi - however, the oil warning light won't stop flashing.

There is no accompanying warning buzzer sound, and the oil level is fine.

Has anyone experienced the same, and if so, how did you solve the problem?

Thank you in advance to anyone who can shed a bit of light on this problem!

What brand of oil filter did you fit?
Is the sump damaged at all?

I smell trouble there mate, how long between oil changes??? The strainers were bad for clogging especially when you fill with fresh new oil, flushes the crap into the strainer. Have the pressure tested if ok ill post the way to check the switches as dependant on switch colour depends on how the switch works.
      Cheers

Just a bit on the pressure switches. There are 2 on the engine, a low pressure one of .3 BAR which turns off the light when you start the engine.

The other one works at 1.8BAR. This causes the light and buzzer to come on when you hit 2000 revs if there isn't enough pressure.

If you do have mega low pressure, i'd expect the tappets to be heard for a 3 block radius.

Check you haven`t knocked one of the wires off the two oil sensors on top of the oil filter housing.

                Thank you for the advice...

Thank you all for the advice! I haven't had opportunity to stick my head under the bonnet yet. I will post further when I've investigated it.

That being said, the engine is running quietly with no noise coming from the tappets.

I'm running a Purolator filter and the sump does not appear damaged.

                Will post further later

I would only use German filters here. We did a test years ago on an 1800 Kombi and found 8lbs difference (lower) with a Ryco filter to a good old Mann!
