Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

So, I'm getting my golf up to RWC and there are a couple of slightly odd problems:
    1. Replaced the left and right headlight bulbs and fuses, yet the left still doesn't work, do the switches die often or should I be digging further?
    2. Fuel gauge isn't working is this likely to be the gauge itself or the gravity float (as VW call it) in the fuel tank?
    3. Both the fog lights are out, I have new bulbs on the way but does anyone know if that's likely to be the problem (I'm a tad worried after the main lights didn't work)

    Thanks in advance!

Have you checked for voltage in the headlight connectors? Brown is earth, white high beam and yellow low beam. There's 4 fuses for the lights in total, 2 each for low beam and high beam.

If you look at the connector for the fuel tank. You'll see 4 wires from memory. 2 for the pump and 2 for the sender. Pretty sure google will tell the colours for each system. Disconnect the plug and probe the sender for resistance. See what you get. Not sure if there's a fuse? It's a long walk into the garage to check a Haynes out

Foglights, confirm the power is there before anything else.

Cheers mate, I'll have a look
Should I just check if there is any voltage (ie test light) or should I be checking for a certain amount of voltage (ie with a multimeter)?

Always a multimeter first with me. It is possible to get a full voltage reading and have no light. If there was a monster resistance in line but you would soon work that out.

2 volts probably wouldn't be seen in the lamp unless it was a 3 volt one so you would figure there was nothing there, which wouldn't be true.

I am an Avionics guy and test lights don't usually figure in troubleshooting.

Alright, so the headlights are know working.
When I put on high beams, the fog lights turn on, yet the fog light switch doesn't does anything. Is this normal (as in road worthy).
I think I'll just give the fuel thing to a Mechanic lol
