  • Speedo Cable, Help!?

    Hi guys, need help.

Got a new mk3 5speed 'box fitted recently. Mechanic had trouble with the speedo cable, he says that it didnt reach something inside the 'box. I bought the 'box of Matt so I gave him a ring (sorry Matt) and he said there should be a cog on the end of it....i told the mechanic and he said he couldnt find it in the old box or anywhere in the work space.

This is what the speedo cable looks like now?

Speedo doesnt work, is it because of the speedo cable or is it something els?

You need a new speedo gear I'm afraid. That cable should definitely have a gear on the end of it. The old gear probably fell off into the old box. Your speedo won't work without it.

I just had a bit of a dig around. Looks like the gear and cable are separate items. There's a UK seller selling just the gear on e-bay.

If you're quick though you might be able to pop down to a wreckers and grab one today. I notice you're in Melbourne. There's 2 MK Is that should still have this part at a wrecker in Ringwood.

You better get your skates on though they shut at 4 on Sundays and it's BYO tools.

Otherwise it's probably a part you can still get from VW.

I got one from VW. $15

How is it suposta stay on the cable? Is there ment to be a clip or something? Is there something in the gearbox that holds it on?

It just sits on the end of the cable and then mounts to a bush in the gbox.

It could if you dont thread it in carefully.

I have found heaps in the bottom of gearboxes. It wont hurt the box, but you will need a new one. DONT DROP IT.

Im pretty sure there is a small C clip as in the Bentley to hold the gear on.

                        New box or new gear?

I put the gear on the cable and as soon as i turn it around it falls off.

What is there to hold it on?

I think i might just forget it and drive without a speedo, cbf dad yellin when I drop it in and the mechanic spinning bull**** about imaginary clips and other stuff i have to spend money on.

Found what the problem is. There is ment to be a circlip that goes on the cable to hold on the gear. The bit on the end that houses the circlip is missing. Thanks to the mechanic.

Here is a pic, circled is what is missing:

Dealership doesnt sell it, so i need a new cable.

                          Cheers guys.

does your cable have the square bit that spins round and round.?

Put the gear on it and put it in the box. I have done that with heaps of dodgy Mk1 cables and they worked.

Dont wana risk more problems with the gear falling off etc.
Just found out today that the water pump is leeking so thats another thing on top of everything els, wooot old cars
                              Just to list a few:
Righ shock busted, left front suspention making squeeking sound (probly coz the dirty radiator water spilt all over the control arm), something wrong with stearing, mechanic didnt replace that ruber thing that goes between the top of the suspention and the chassie with the new ones, said they wernt needed and now it makes a terible noise when you turn, like rubber strugling then it pops at a certain point, just needs to be broken in he says...my question is why does it need to be broken in when its old. no dash lights, no matter what setting its on air only blows out of the front demister, air con doesnt work, valves tapping, wont start properly (blue sensor problem), radiator water is like a lata coffee, with the cream and everything, and the 8v is to damn slow.

                              Gota love it though.

The mechanic is going to pay for the speedo cable anyway.

Does anyone have a part number for it? and a GOOD mechanic that knows there way around a mk2 and doesnt charge an arm, leg and kidney?
