okay, just took out all the spark plugs and the fuel pump fuse and relay and turned it over, fair amount of fuel shot out... thankfully clearing the engine bay

It turns over freely so doesn't look like the motor has suffered from any catastrophic failure... dark now so I can't do much more but its something, at least.

edit: hmm, nope. Plugs and leads all back on, won't start but will still turn over, intake all hooked back up after that, won't turn over. Battery was still 12.2 volts but maybe that wasn't enough.

        Does that mean it's working?

Nope, means I'm cracking it open to check for obvious signs of water damage and sending it to a place on the gold coast to repair.

What's the cost of a second hand unit from CamdenGTI?

Okay, so apparently Aus delivered mk2's were digifant I and had the same ECM as the emissions restricted California models. Double checking my part number against the one I've been given by Camden GTI to confirm...

edit: my part number doesn't match the one at Camden, mine is a digifant II 037 906 022 AG

Ummm.... My suggestion would be to look online

I purchased my ECU just recently from a guy selling it on eBay UK... Payed $210.00 including shipping

You might have to wait for one to show up on eBay or maybe someone on this forum has one that they want to sell

The other suggestion is to contact one of the overseas VW suppliers like VWheritage
And maybe they can find one for you

Okay I've just pulled the ECU out. Theres a fair amount of either corrosion, or grease on the main set of pins (hopefully the photo will show it up, just a white gunky build up). I've doused it in CRC so it looks better than what it does when I took it out.

It's also mounted really poorly on to the bracket, only 2 screws are holding it on and they're both really loose and wobbly... sweet.

Also, what does this plug actually do? It doesn't go anywhere... does it ground to the metal block under it?

Are those screws needed for a ground? Give it a good clean n dry out and fit it properly, might be in luck..

It's possible, only 2 of the 4 (?) required screws are going to the metal heatsink, and out of those 2 one is missing and the other is loose as all hell. The bracket the ecu mounts in to is painted (or powder coated?) though so who knows.

Okay, looks like we have some gunk on the inside of the unit too

The chips, resistors and capacitors all look physically unharmed. In the second picture there you can see a copper ribbon and solder that has snapped. This and the gunk on the main pin set are the two ones I would point at being a possible issue.

EDIT: I've bought a pack of matching nuts and bolts to re mount it all shiny and new instead of corroded and covered in crap...

Soldered... thoroughly cleaned and reassembled, re mounted in the bracket securely, fingers crossed boys and girls.

I am not a gambling man, but I wouldn't be too surprised it it starts up now.

                              Cheap fix.

That is the Ignition control unit... Just a word of warning... Be careful when you working on the electronics..just make sure the ignition is OFF when disconnecting any of the plugs from the ECU or ICU ( Ignition Control Unit)

You can clean all the terminals on the ECU and it might fix the issue.. Clean the screws attaching it to the body and make sure make sure they are secure

What engine do you have?.. What are the letters in front of your engine number?... This will help determine what type of system you haven and can advise accordingly
