hehe.. definately not. i have a bit of theoretical base, just haven't worked a day in my life on a car. i cant wait to start

i really dont think anything at the moment could discourage me!! i suppose the next order of business is getting a haynes manual.. and ripping out the airbox..

hopefully you guys can guide me through my times of need.. gawd, i dont even have the car yet!

ey mike i'm just curious... are your comments directed towards 99% of oldish dubs or is it just this specific one that you believe will be a bit of a sucker?

ps jay jay i hope you mean bentley manual not heynes

state library has one if you need bedtime reading material hehe

most oldish vdubs will have a few issues at some point, either due to natural degradation, rough driving, accidents and you can get away with taking it to a mechanic for the odd job... what i said applies to any olds vdubs that arent close to standard or in good nick, as a mechanic will charge you muchly if there is much to do... but if you can sit down with some good tools and a manual (bentley is much much better) and follow the steps logically and correctly, then you will be surprised what you can actually do..

the first time i changed a clutch i had no idea how to do it, but when i put everything back together and drove out of the shed (having learned a great deal in the process), i was stoked !

this mk2 is rough and would not be worth it if you were just gonna pay someone else to fix it.. but if you get it for $500 and have a go, it wont matter if you never get it on the road cos you'll learn stacks!

i love my old vws and even when im stuck out in the middle of the night with a blown gearbox i have no regrets.. i think i spent about $100 all up on mechanics in the last four years and that was just cos i dont have a shop press..

If you do get the car book it in with golf loon to get checked over and serviced, once that is done fiddle around with it and tidy it up. Any older car can become a money pit if not careful, just go in with your eyes open, so far my mk2 has cost about 6.5k including an engine swap and there is still a huge list of things to do, including a new one: the alternator belt snapped last night!. The haynes manual is fine for most jobs, if it is not in there then Im not sure what you are doing....
          Anyway good luck!!!

                    Yeah nice work.

How much did you get it for??

It goes hard that car and nice leather under the seat covers.

I reckon you could sell the ugly wheels to some young idiot on ebay for $500 or so.

I have heaps of 14 and 15inch golf rims to fit that car.

They are great and as it has mechanical injection is 110hp motor instead of the wheezy 90hp aussie versions. Only trouble is finding someone who can tune it, but it wont need tuning often.

Bring it down when its registered and I`ll tell you lots about it.

Enjoy it as a daily. i reckon a strong 8v kjet GTI is the best engine to drive by far

Congratulations JayJay, this was my car. If you pm me, I can send you a list of what I had done to it over the last year or so. It's a great car and I loved every minute of driving it. Golf loon did an awesome job rebuilding it a few years back (and is always quick to help out) and still goes hard. You've got yourself a great car that'll give you lots and lots of pleasure (and maybe just a little bit of heartache occasionally....like all golfs)
                      Cheers
                      Steve
By the way, you can blame me for the leopard print seat covers but the hideous wheels were on it when I bought it!!
