Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Specs
    • 1990 4 Door MK2 GTI - Alpine White
    • ABF - Seat Toldeo 1995 - 16V Conversion
    • KONI STR Suspension Kit -30mm ride
    • REPLICA 15x7 rims with a wide offset...

And this is where the fun began, we had to roll the guards and while doing it, we damaged them, so off to Autobarn for some touch up paint and decided, what the hell, we'll buy a spray gun and a litre of Alpine white to get a better colour match. Well, we peeled back the mask and you guessed it, way off colour, seemed perhaps it had a coat once before.

So, from a small touch up to a full blown paint job, lots of hassles too as it's our first attempt at it.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Time to add some value to the Watercooled site:

    Working History:

Problem: Toledo Steering shaft lower diameter issues
Description: Becuase the 1995 ECU from the Toledo is immobilised the steering shaft needed to be swapped over, the lower diamter of the shaft didnt sleeve into the bearing in the column correctly. So we packed it out with aluminium tape. This issue was rectified later when a new steering colum arrived with new ECU.

    Problem: ECU failure
Description: Just before taking the car home for my son's birthday, while simply reversing out from the driveway the engine lost all spark and never recovered. We checked:
    • Check all wiring connections
    • Check Hall sender unit in dizzy and checked Dizzy
    • Check Crank Sensor, bought a new one too.
    • Check continuity from ECU to all sensors and wiring harness connector
    • Bought New coil and replaced all ingition leads
    • Check immobiliser and ensure fuel pump active and checked for fuel
    • Tidied up all wiring inspected and repaired all frayed wires, strapped and tidied.

    Conclusion:
The ECU was trashed.. found one in Germany with two keys and shaft and waited for delivery. On arrival ensured all my grounds were connected to one common area on the block to overcome any potential difference. Tripled checked all wiring and turned the key and she fired up first time. While I too was a skeptic that the ECU was dead, but had tried everything else using LEDS, multimeters and so on and without the VAG system port (Toledo engine didnt come with one on harness and the wiring colours are different from VW) I was working blind. The new Steering shaft fit the column bearing and many thanks to the Momo distributor in Vic for all the help with swapping bosses as the splines varied on the shaft.

    Problem:Water pump and Thermostat Failure
Description: Driving to fix an exhaust pipe failure thec ar began to overheat.
    • Overflow reservoir was pressured and cracked with the stress
    • Could not seem to get water into the block via radiator
    • Backfilled block via heating systems and limped home via Repco
    • Checked Lower Water supply and it was cold, assumed water pump failure

    Conclusion:
Purchased Water Pump, off with the front end and removed water pump to find the impeller had been refurbished and didnt fit well. Looked inside to find a thermostat, checked it and it had failed CLOSED. No water circulating! Replaced all lower hoses, son made a stainless steel connection to get over the chassis mount and replaced the thermostat. Off to wreckers to get a new OverFlow reservoir, found there's more than one type and had to extend wires for sensor connection. Flushed and replaced entire coolant system with the "RED STUFF" all good since!

Bumpers arent great, looked into getting some new ones, hate doing it and while there's a lot of contention about using clips on bumpers, it works, but old plastic bumpers at best...It's like polishing a "third" Realised they need the wheel arches, on a wet road, lots of road stuff kicks onto panels, Bought some cheap imitation angel eyes, I'm in two minds if to get the original Hellas re-chromed. Sunk them in hot water for a while and the glue let go so worked out how to clean them up. Got Chinese imitation BUDGET lights thinking there's surely something to be gained even if they dont work. Well they worked after recrimping and bulbs arent any brighter and what was a cheap buy took us the most part of a day to get it sorted .. finish was poor, no quality control, and I got what we payed for! But het, we filled the gap in the front bumper with some 2 driving lights, so I have a few more candles and all is good.

Real problems lie in fuel injector rail... need to be RID of those fuel interconnects.¿
