Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • A/C system charge

Bit of a question for other MK2 (or 1) owners with R12 A/C system converted to R134A.

How long does your system hold its gas for?

Recently had my system serviced as in the period of 12 months it had lost it's charge.
No leaks could be found and was told that over time, R134A can 'sweat' out of older A/C systems.

It should not disappear that quick and there should be a sign If the system was properly retrofitted to take the R13 then it should be good for years. My bet is the didn't change any of the r12 o rings when they replaced the gas and its leaked. And if they didn't replace the oil then the leak would leave no sign as the dye is in the oil

should not leak that quickly, another thing to keep in mind for R134 is to use barrier hose. it is different from the hoses used for R12.

You just confirmed what I was thinking.
There's about 3 metre's of old rubber A/C hose in the engine bay
