Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • mk2 with air con random questions

    hello everyone

Have recently upgraded my 16v with both power steering and Air con. The air con is not fully functional yet and the heater matrix hasn't been connected.

1# The first question I have is when you move the switch off zero (ie the interior fan will start), when you move the switch all the way across to the non Snowflake part of the panel is the compressor still activated?

The reason I'm questioning this is today when testing out the system I moved the top switch across to direct air at the windscreen and then when the revs got up (approx 3000RPM) the compressor started squeaking.

2# Why would the compressor squeak when running? at higher revs only(above approx 3000RPM).

3# The next question is in regards to starting the car.
After running the compressor for a few seconds while driving and then turning the a/c off and then a while later turning off the vehicle, then the next time I try to start it the engine the first attempt doesn't turn due to some unknown extra load. But it starts freely on the second attempt.
Does anyone know why this might happen?

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Cheers Carl.

The demister uses the airconditioner because it blows dry air and demists the windscreen quicker. All the settings in between the demister and the snowflake labelled settings don't use the compressor.

Not sure why you've got high rev squeaking. The belt squeals on my car when I use the demister sometimes, especially when it's raining.

    That's all I got sorry.

Cheers for that, I discovered as much when I looked at it more, and the belt only squeaks from time to time now, not every time I put the A/C on.

I haven't encountered the starting issue again since then either
