Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Oh yeah, and yours has a side indicator on the fornt fender where mine doesnt. I guess these are differences in the British delivered cars. Interesting.
The wolfsburg badge is hiding the indicator hole. Mine has an early GTI badge in there. I retrofitted some lights US style to be legal.

It's odd with the side indicators isnt it? Different countries had different laws for them. I guess OZ was OK with not having them. My VN Bommodore doesnt have one either. The US were more strict I believe.

So, ive decided instead of making my mk2 a 5year project i'd chop it down! by changing the engine that i'll be dropping in.
initially i wanted to go for the 1.8t 20V but but iv'e decided that that's way too much work for a man of my calibre!
so on with the 16V turbo project.
basically im now trying to find a 16V engine: and have realised the come in different "flavours"
"The 16V motor comes in various flavours:
You can get a tall-block, 236mm high with 159mm long rods, in the form of a 2 litre ABF
Or a standard block, 220mm high and 144mm conrods, with 2 different capacities:
1.8 litres, 86.4mm stroke, 81mm bore, in the form of KR and PL
2.0 litres, 92.8mm stroke, 82.5mm bore, in the form of 9A (and Audi 6A)"
so was just wondering what everyones experience is with the various 16V's and maybe which would be the best for a turbo project.
i dont know much about the engine so i thought id post!
and if anyones heard of any going around hit us up!
also, does anyone know what they usually go for? ~ approximately..Mk1 Gti 81 2Dr
Mk2 Gti 88 2Dr
Mk4 R32 04

I think it would be easier to put a 20VT in, than install and turbo a 16V. Just imo. 20VT is already factory turbo'd, 16V more custom work.
Have a look on clubgti. heaps of really good info on there.s

Jarred's right..
Setting up a turbo can be a real PITA!!
The 20VT is all good to go, and you should be able to get more power more easily.
Either option will need new wiring, mods etc.
ClubGti is full of helpful info for any engine.

not really, good 16V's can be the same as a 20VT. If you're worried about the $$, then you shouldn't attempt the swap at this stage, save up for a few more years.
What ever your budget is now, you can safely double it!
