Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Gearbox - replace or rebuild?

    Hi All,

The gearbox on my 91 GTI is getting a bit long in the tooth and will need serious work done on it in the not too distant future.

I'm contemplating either a replacement or a rebuild but need some advice.

If I go the replacement route, what gearboxes are available? I believe finding a good condition Mk2 box will be next to impossible. Will a Mk2 box or any other alternatives fit? (standard Aussie spec 1.8 litre 8v engine).

If I go the rebuild path, where can I source the required parts from?

Are there any other options open to me?

    cheers,
    Goudgey

just get another goodish one from Matt at Camden GTI..
to get someone to rebuild the box, it will cost $1500-$2000.
I think Matt sells 2nd hand ones for under $1000, get one and wack in it... done.

    whats wrong anyway??
i made a stupid choice getting it rebuilt because the reverse gear was competely chewed up!! should have just got another.
i got it done by someone who is supposed to be good at rebuilds, but i've had so much trouble with them since.

Yeah just bang a 2nd hand one in, mk 2 box's are known for 1st to 2nd gear crunch when cold. Might as well do clutch while your at it
