  • servicing a jetta that only does 5000kms per year

    hey all

I have a 1 year old jetta that has driven just over 5000kms
    ive had it since new

How often should I service this car?

If I service it every 15,000kms and it maybe 2 or 3 years in between services will my warranty still be intact?

    Thanks

    once a year or 15,000kms

if you are doing low kms you must come in at least once a year to ensure you don't void the warranty

I think it's stated in the owners manual; 15,000km or 12 months which ever comes first.
But, you actually using the car under severe driving conditions and you should consider servicing it more often.

          thx

why is it important to service the car every 12 months even though its hardly been used?
Also what is done during the service besides changing oil?

          thx

because oil breaks down over time, irrespective of how many ks you do. And as oil is the lifeblood of the motor, you always want that to be fresh and clean.

Given the cost of the car Vs 5L of oil, why risk it? Case of penny wise pound foolish.....

As Transporter says - it's in the Service manual (white with green) - your sales person (if they done their job ) should have ticked the correct service interval.
If you live in places with high heat (outback/Far North in-land) & really dusty conditions you should do it every 10,000kms

ok but if its just an oil change I can do that myself.
Why pay $400 for an oil change?

Do they do anything else in this service that cant be done at 15,000kms?

I live in melb city it doesnt get that hot and its just a weekend car most days its in the garage sitting there

                thx

As "Analyst" says - the oil is vital to the car. Most engine issues often can be traced back to old oil or wrong oil used (that goes for all manufacturers); the other benefit is, if there are any service campaigns (and there always are some...) they get done at the same time. That is also a BIG advantage using genuine VW service. Sometimes it can be just a software update or a suspect part gets replaced.

Yes they do, the visual inspection of the engine bay and under the car. So, unless you're trained mechanic, you could easily miss something just happening and it could be vital for the road safety to you and others, which could be easily repaired/corrected. That's the downside of the DIY servicing, doing just an oil change.
