  • Engine query for the gurus

I bought another mk2 on the weekend, it's a parts car for my 87 2 door gti, the newest addition is an 86 4 door with a terrible blue paint job lol, my question is about the engine, it's a hm code, which as far as my re search and poking around has told me its a 1.6, solid lifter (#4 cam retainer present) carby fed motor, what's got me stuffed is its got 1.8 stamped on the back of the block? I'm assuming it is a 1.6 just in a 1.8 block as they are essentially the same?

    Cheers,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,

I remember reading recently (some other forum) the 1.6 block (from a Polo or some non GTI variant i believe) shares the same block with the 1.8 therefore had 1.8 stamped.

I am amazed how you manage to find a Mk2 as a parts car in WA?!!? I assume its not a late big bumper version, i am after some nice side skirts

Your man above me is correct, the 1.6 and 1.8 engine share the same block. The cranks are different.

Quokka is your friend! Was down just past bunbury, nice 5hr round trip and she's in my garage being destroyed lol It's an early spec, but some ones shoved big bumpers on it at some point and some chunky looking side door trims, and then painted it that shade of blue that you'd find in the gay pride rainbow, it'll be up for parts soon if your interested
