  • Door wont unlock!

    Hey guys

My MK 2 driver door wont unlock. The key turns but doesnt open the lock. If I pull the catch lever and turn the key I can get it to unlock half way, you know where the door if loose but still in the lock. I cant unlock from the button inside either.

Has anyone else had this problem and know the best way to fix it?

Doing the Dukes of hazard through the window is fun for the first few times but I really need to fix it now......

    Cheers

Sounds like it might be clogged up, pull the lock off and clean it out, lube it up and throw it back on.
Because it is the drivers door it maybe be worn from all it's use
Or the connecting rod from the latch to the lock isnt on properly..
Just pull it all off, it isn't to hard

I don't think you'll be able to remove the door handle with the door shut (one of the door handle retaining screws is in the side of the door). I think the only way would be to try to get the door card out (not sure if this is possible with the door shut? Could be difficult as there are also screws holding the door card that could be inaccessible with the door shut). Once that is off you should be able to access the lock and remove it without removing the door handle (it's held by a screw at the back).

If you can manage to get the door open, try this
Carefully unclip the cover on the door handle, underneath there are two screws bolting it to the door. Unscrew them.
Then use an Allen key (6mm?) to unbolt the lock located on the side of the door.
There's a hook and a tab you need to disconnect, can take some jiggling. Leave them hanging through the hole so you don't loose them.
Take the lock off then take the handle off.
Check for wear on both parts, but hopefully it's just gummed up.

That's just from memory, so if i missed something shoot me

This may sound silly, but have you tried pushing the actual door up or down?
I have heaps of trouble with my sagging drivers door always trying to catch on the striker pin, this method works for me.

thanks for the help guys, I will try and get it open this weekend.

You are right Domel, its near impossible to do anything because the door is shut!

I will experiment with the passenger door first, then try the driver side. I might remove the driver seat before I start.

I will post the outcome when I'm done.....

            Cheers

Don't know if this will work, but if you can't get the door open, take off the handle like I described above, but pull the whole thing out.
Then get a screwdriver and try to flick the lever on the lock to open position, may need to jiggle the door.

What about removing the handle from the inside and pulling the rod?

Yea, If there's no evidence of damage, it's pretty much dust gone past the window scrapers and into the lock mechanism. I've gotten out of this situation before with WD40 and and lot of patience. There's probably not much need to go to too much trouble, just take the handle off and burn off half and hour pressing the latch, opening and closing. Good luck.
