    its all swings and roundabouts...
Back home in the UK there is a massive war which is 8v v 16v when it come to chosing an engine.
As its already been said jumping to a std 16v (kr/abf/9a) would give you more bhp per $ u spend.
I am a pure 16v guy at heart, but a well tune 8v will give a 16v a dam good run for there money.

The basic trend in the UK is 2.0 16v (mainly k-jets in mk1 and mk2's) but 160bhp+ can be made out of a kr 1.8 unit but you get more low down torque with the 2.0.
a audi 9a bottom end with a kr head running on k-jet will give you 150bhp+ easy and all day long.

now ive been reading on here that there isnt many kr 16v here in oz...ever thought about getting some imported as you can buy a whole 1.8 16v engine back in the uk for under $200

for 2.0 16v tune look on the ClubGTI forum www.clubgti.com/forum and there is a 2.0 16v tuning guide on there as most people run 2.0 16v's as track cars

Cost all depends on availability and demand, that said you should be able to get an ABF for around 2K if you can find one, and a KR for about $1500.
