    Hi all,

I bought a 1990 Mk2 GTI on the weekend and am wrapped with it (so far!). Its in pretty good nick and is in remarkably good condition for the 230k its done. It blows no smoke and runs smooth....its got a couple of issues tho the main ones being:

    1. It feathers up and down +-100rpm whilst idling
    2. 5th gear dosent engage without pushing the lever down like reverse

I assume no.2 is due to 5th gear synchro has dropped its lunch? Since i bought it off a dealer, he was trying to tell me that thats the way they were made.....i maybe new to golfs but knew that was bs and duly knocked another $900 off the price...

Thanks for the help in advance

Tell u what driving this little thing has put a smile on my face

          Nice work.
          Probably gear linkages, not gearbox.
They all hunt up and down, too many sensors.

Welcome mate, you've come to the right place

With the 5th gear issue, Loon is right, it doesn't sound like a gearbox problem, more like the linkages. I had the exact same problem with my Mk2, i had to push the shifter into the floor to get into 5th, and remedied it by replacing the whole plastic shifter socket and ball on the bottom of the shift lever, and realigning the shift positions. It is a painful and involved process, but not too difficult if you have a little bit of mechanical knowledge and a set of good chassis stands...

The shifter rebuild set (the ball and socket) costs about $65 from VW, or $18 from HSY autoparts...

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your MK2 GTI.

The "hunting" in my opinion is NOT normal and mine certainly never did it. Clean the ISV and check your throttle body switches.

                          good luck

Hey thanks for the advice guys, u guys are cool...ive always had french cars so im used to snobs and t***jobs

Yeah i hope i can sort that 5th gear thing out, im glad that it might not be as serious as i thought. I need a new gearstick boot, looks asif maybe the car yard grease monkeys have already had a go at the linkages

I was actually looking more for a Peugeot 405mi16 when i came across this little beauty...it was a in the moment thing...when i had a drive of it and saw that it had its spare and associated tools still in the boot, i had to have it. I put it on the credit card and drove it home! Meine first Deustch auto lol....

Actually those of u who have been to europe would know these things have a cult following over there...i remember being a teeny bopper and being a passenger in a mk2 GTI 16 valver...ill never forget it

I woulda gone for a Corrado G60 if they were available here

Ive only got a couple phone photos for y'as
