  • Did mk2 gti come with LSD?

My question is as the title states I have a 91 mk2 8v auto GTi that I just recently bought as a project come run around the other day while checking out a rattle in the brakes I noticed that when I spun the wheels both left and right spun in the same direction and this happened whether I spun them backwards or forwards. Not sure if they cam with an LSD didn't think they did.
Any light on this matter is greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Rax

i noticed this on mine when i was pulling it apart, i asked my south african mate whos a pretty full bottle on everything golf and he said that they didnt, but both wheel spinning the same way doesnt always mean theres an lsd apparently, like you i dont know if mines stock though, maybe some one who knows theres doesnt have an lsd could jack there car up and give the wheels a spin and let us know!

ps- was it the red one you bought off gumtree?

from memory if you lift the front and turn a wheel by hand, wheels turn different directions.

            AFAIK, there non LSD.

From what I've found, when the g'box oil is cold the internals of the diff (pinion/side gears) will make the wheels move in the same direction.

As soon as the oil warms up (or even if you get one person to spin the other wheel in the opposite direction) then it starts acting as you imagine a diff would (wheels turn in opposite directions)

That just my take/experience on it though

It's just pre-load on the drive flanges to prevent torque steer.

There's kits on the market to increase the load. Peloquin Transaxles

Very unlikely that you have an LSD they were never fitted stock and they're very rare/expensive after market.

Thanks for all the input guys and yeah its the red one off Gumtree, funnily enough the car was hot when I checked it so still confused. Ah well no matter I will find out when I take it apart eventually. Its proving to be quite a task sourcing bits and pieces for the car does anyone have a set of window trims they wanna sell or know of anyone with them that I can buy it from?

No mk2 GTI ever came standard with LSD. Especially not an automatic like yours (that would be totally pointless). Dunno why the wheels turn the same way but i've come accross that before...

I have tried increasing the preload with spacers such as the kits available from peloquins to improve traction and they do work, i even machined up my own at different thicknesses to experiment and find the best size. This is a very cheap and quick alternative to fitting an LSD though not as good as one.

Wondering how many Perth based mk2 owners are on here.

Should do a roll call... I've only seen one other on the road and it was a black 2 door, seen more mk1's buzzing around than mk2's!
